フォーマル度

soは日常会話やカジュアルな文章で使われるのに対し、thereforeは学術論文やビジネス文書などのフォーマルな文章で使われます。thereforeの方が格式が高い表現です。

文法的な位置

soは通常カンマの後に置いて2つの文をつなぎますが、thereforeは文の始まりや中間で使われ、前後にセミコロンやカンマが必要になることが多いです。
