この文法は何か
「despite」と「in spite of」は「〜にもかかわらず」という意味の譲歩を表す前置詞句です。両者は意味がほぼ同じで、どちらを使っても構いません。
いつ使うか
困難や障害があるにもかかわらず何かが起こったことを表現するときに使います。予想に反する結果を示すのに効果的です。

重要ポイント
- 1despite と in spite of は意味が同じ（〜にもかかわらず）
- 2どちらも前置詞なので、後ろには名詞または動名詞が来る
- 3despite は1語、in spite of は3語だが意味は同じ
- 4後ろに節（主語+動詞）を続けたい場合は "despite/in spite of the fact that" を使う
- 5although や even though（接続詞）とは異なり、前置詞なので節は直接続けられない
